Digital Twin Workshop Recap

The Digital Twins Master's program (www.digitwin4ciue.eu), supported by EELISA, recently held a successful on-site event at BME, marking a key milestone for its second cohort. Over the course of three days, students, mentors, and industry experts collaborated intensively on their joint projects, strengthening both their technical and teamwork skills.

While the program is primarily conducted online, the three on-site events held throughout the year play a crucial role in fostering personal connections, networking, and hands-on collaboration on capstone projects.

The first on-site event for this cohort took place in Madrid in November, and a summary of that event can be found on the program’s website.

Day 1 of the Digital Twin Workshop – A Great Start!

The three-day event kicked off with an insightful keynote presentation on Structural Health Monitoring – Bridging Physical and Digital Realms by Attila Berényi, a former researcher at BME’s Department of Photogrammetry and Geoinformatics. Now working at SURVIOT, a startup specializing in sensor technology, he introduced innovative solutions for structural health monitoring.

Following this, participants engaged in an Entrepreneurship Workshop led by Gábor Dehelán, an Innovation Management expert from BME FIEK. More than just a lecture, this session encouraged learners to connect, collaborate, and realize that TEAM stands for "Together Everyone Achieves More." Through interactive discussions and shared experiences, they explored how collective creativity and innovation drive success in digital twin applications.

Later in the morning, participants took part in an XR and IoT demonstration, where they explored interactive AR/MR applications developed by BME’s Department of Photogrammetry and Geoinformatics. Additionally, in a demo by AdvaNet Hungary Ltd., they were introduced to fiber optic sensing technologies applied in digital twins.

Lunch at SZPOT provided a great opportunity for informal discussions and networking.

In the afternoon, students presented the projects they developed as part of their coursework, sharing their progress and insights. The event was also broadcast online, allowing remote participants to join in and contribute.

Day 2 of the Digital Twin Workshop - A Deep Dive into Capstone Projects!

The second day of the workshop began with an exciting Seminar presentation on deep-sea photogrammetry and shipwreck research, delivered by Pierre-Yves Lepage, a student from the DigiTwin program. The session provided insights into underwater 3D mapping techniques and sparked professional discussions on its research applications and future possibilities.

After the morning session, participants continued working on their capstone projects in smaller groups, guided by industry experts and academic mentors. This dedicated work session allowed teams to refine their project objectives, address technical challenges, and further develop their concepts. Later in the day, each group had the opportunity to present their progress, share their plans, and discuss challenges with the other teams. This interactive session facilitated constructive discussions, knowledge exchange, and mentor feedback, helping to shape the next steps of each project.

To wrap up the day, the workshop concluded with a reflection on key takeaways, discussions on future collaboration opportunities, and appreciation for the contributions of participants, mentors, and organizers.

Day 3 – Exploring Industry 4.0 Demonstrations

As part of an optional program on the final day, participants visited the BME Industry 4.0 Technology Center, where they explored industrial innovations through interactive demonstrations.
